Scientists find the key to cot deaths

It is hoped that babies with the brain abnormality that leads to cot death may be identified by a scan in the womb
SCIENTISTS believe that they have found the underlying cause of cot death, a condition that claims the lives of hundreds of babies every year.
Research into dozens of infant fatalities identified as the result of sudden infant death syndrome showed that the victims had a brain abnormality that prevents the detection of insufficient oxygen levels in the body. As a result, babies with the condition can be smothered in their bedclothes, especially if they are sleeping on their fronts.

Comentário: A síndrome da morte súbita infantil (SIDS na sigla inglesa, também conhecida como morte do berço) é a morte abrupta de uma criança enquanto está a dormir, e é a maior causa de morte de bebés. Até agora não havia qualquer explicação para esta morte (mesmo após autópsia), mas pela primeira vez um estudo científico descobriu que as crianças que morreram de SIDS tinham uma deformidade numa dada zona do cérebro que impedia a detecção de níveis insuficientes de oxigénio no seu organismo. É uma excelente notícia pois vai permitir que os pais saibam se os seus filhos têm este problema ou não, para depois poderem tomar as medidas necessárias para o debelar eficazmente.
