Encompassing the Globe: Portugal in the 16th and 17th Centuries

This online exhibition, courtesy of the Smithsonian's Sackler Gallery, documents the global influence of Portugal and its explorations to Brazil, Africa, China, and the Indian Ocean during the 1500s and 600s.

The site uses Google Earth to let visitors track legendary voyages by Vasco da Gama, Francisco de Almeida and other famous explorers, and boasts images of exotic and foreign objects they brought back from their journeys.
