Bufalândia
Academic careers, it is often observed, are based on pointing out flaws in the work of one's closest colleagues - or failing that, in the personalities of those colleagues. Seemingly, that is how science progresses. But a British innovation that went live this week may elevate this hallowed tradition to altogether a new level.
Biomedical researchers can now rat on cheating workmates to the UK's first academic whistleblowers' hotline. The initiative comes on the heels of high-profile cases abroad of serious academic misconduct. Scientific peer review alone was not enough to prevent reputable academic journals from publishing fake stem-cell research, and fraudulent data claiming to show that a drug reduced the risk of oral cancer.

Comentário: O incentivo da “bufagem” não é exclusivamente “tuga”. O último exemplo é este, no Reino Unido: vai ser criada uma linha telefónica especial para que investigadores denunciem outros investigadores sobre os quais haja suspeitas de comportamentos cientificamente impróprios, como falseamento de dados. Desta forma querem evitar-se casos como o do professor sul-coreano que forjou os resultados da sua investigação com células estaminais.
Assim, em Portugal os funcionários públicos são incentivados pelo Governo a “bufar” os seus colegas. No Reino Unido os investigadores podem “bufar” telefonicamente. Como dizia há pouco a um dos meus orientadores aqui em Cambridge: parece que estamos a viver numa “whistleblower wonderland” (eu traduziria como “bufalândia” :))...
